Ergonomic Keyboards Design Secrets
Most computer users spend enormous portions of our lives at a desk, in front of a computer. This can add up to a high degree of stress. Many of us consider such work to be quite safe, since it does not require a high degree of physical exertion. This assumption is misplaced; if you do not take steps to prevent a stressful work arrangement, you may cause your body repetitive stress throughout the course of the workday.
Since most of us spend a huge amount of our lives in a computer desk environment, this can amount to a tremendous degree of repetitive stress. Thus it is vital to take into account the ergonomics of our workspace in order to avoid unnecessary repetitive stress. Computer work is very safe if you have your workspace arranged to minimize stress and maximize your comfort.
Most computer users do not have their workspace properly arranged to prevent repetitive stress injury. RSI can be prevented by using ergonomic keyboards and other ergonomically sound habits. Many large companies will hire a consultant to ensure that you have an ergonomically safe work environment.
Ergonomic keyboards are particularly important as we spend so much of our day typing. A regular keyboard often stresses one of the most sensitive parts of our body into an unnatural position for long periods of time thus leading to injury. Our wrists need to rest in a natural position and the regular keyboard prevents this. Ergonomic keyboards are designed specifically to allow your wrists and hands to sit at the proper angles.
In addition to the keyboard itself you want to ensure your chair is at the right height, your feet rest properly, and your arms align properly with the keyboard. It is also very important that your monitor be positioned at the right height for maximum comfort. Such steps may seem trivial but given the amount of time you sit in front of the computer this could not be further from the truth.
It doesn't take much of an investment to ensure that you have a healthy setup if you work on the computer. The costs are usually covered by the company you work for. Even if the company doesn't do that, it still will cost you much less than safety equipment would in another industry — and less than the cost of the medical care you'd need if you develop poor posture.
In this new day and age the daily use of a computer is extremely frequent. There are also countless jobs that involve sitting at or near a computer all day and require its continual use. Right out of the box the standard desktop/laptop keyboards feel great, but continuous use of them is certain to cause discomfort and sometimes more serious problems. Repetitive stress injury can be caused by such extended use of regular keyboards and thankfully ergonomic keyboards are a saving grace, in that they reduce the strain placed on your wrists and can help prevent injuries.
